Darkness began its surreptitious exit, for a bright new morning when Team VIHAAN from Canara Engineering College unveiled Uchishrava on 20th of April. VIHAAN, a team of 28 students from Mechanical, Electronics and Communication, Electrical and Info.Science. have constructed a small scale hybrid vehicle, Uchishrava named after Lord Indra’s horse. The name VIHAAN stands for the first ray from the sun that touches the earth.
Uchishrava
Hybrids are of parallel and series type. The team chose to build a parallel type by connecting autorickshaw engine to the rear wheels and hub motors from marathon electric bikes which form the front wheels. A manual switching system allows the driver to choose from either of them. It was constructed solely by students in college after class hours and holidays.
Team Vihaan
Radio Mirchi, Mangalore station supported this cause and RJ Vicky hosted a show on the 6th of February. Now the team has registered in a prestigious international event Formula Electric and Hybrid Italy ( FEHI ) in Turin, Italy in the month of October in which teams from universities across the globe have to design and build a Hybrid formula style car.Students from universities and technical institutions can participate with complete vehicles, designed and made up by themselves and compete with dynamic tests such as endurance, acceleration, energy consumption, autocross and climbing ability, following specific rules set up by a technical committee.VIHAAN is the only team from southern India and the second from India, in the competition.

Team Vihaan started as a dream project for 4 students of Mechanical Engineering. Now, the team has grown to 28 members, all classified into 5 sub-teams, namely Engine and Transmission, Vehicle, Suspension and Steering, Electrical Circuits and Management & Sponsorship.
The team has 2 advisors, Mr.Girish Hegde of Mechanical Engineering Department and Prof. Shantharam Rai of Electronics and Communication Department. Mr.Girish Hegde has over 8 years Industrial experience. Prof.Shantharam Rai has done research work for 3 years and also has published 7 papers.
The team has a dynamic leader in Mr. Pavan Annigeri, who is a Diploma holder in Automobile Engineering. He has also trained in Sai Service, Panaji, Goa. Apart from that, he has worked as a technical advisor with Prerana Motors, Bangalore, which deals with Tata commercial vehicles.
The team consists of highly-dedicated members, who are striving hard to transform this dream into a reality. There are 4 diploma holders in the team. The team members have undergone Industrial Training in various industries such as Mandovi Motors, Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL), Bharati Shipyard (Mangalore), Integral Coach Factory (Chennai) and Ford Workshop (Gujarat). Team members also have many laurels to their names, which include 2nd prize in National Level Technical Paper Presentation competition in NMAMIT, Nitte, 2nd prize in Autoquiz at Malnad College of Engineering, Hassan. Members of the team were also selected to attend Aerofest at Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal. All members of the team are also part of the SAE Collegiate Club (Society Of Automotive Engineers, which is an international technical organization). Under SAE, the students have organized two national level technical paper presentation competitions under the banner ‘INNOVATE’, in 2008 and 2009.
The team extends their warm gratitude to all who have encouraged and supported, both morally and financially. But this is just the beginning. The Uchishrava is just a prototype. For the competition they are coming up with a final working formula racing type hybrid vehicle which costs Rs. 16 Lakh. The team requests you to extend a helping hand.
